How to use historical cutoffs without treating them as guarantees.
Historical cutoffs are evidence about past allotments. They are useful for building a choice list, but they do not guarantee a future seat.
Use a range of years
One year's closing rank can be unusually strict or forgiving. Compare several years with the same institute, programme, quota, category and pool.

Separate safer history from certainty
If a rank was inside the closing rank every recent year, that is a stronger historical fit. It still depends on eligibility, choice order, available seats and other candidates.
Build an ordered choice list
Use history to include ambitious, competitive and historically safer options, then order choices by genuine preference rather than predicted probability.
